It is the only airport in the world where aircrafts are made to land on the beach! It is located on the outer Hebridean Island of Barra. This airport has a shape of wide shallow bay. At times the water of high tides from sea comes onto the runway and aircraft has to land over the water. The British airways flight from Glasgow flies to Barra.
If we land at Barra late in the afternoon, you will be surprised and shocked to find the airport vehicles from the parking lot with their lights on to guide the pilot from in case of poor visibilty.
Its not possible to roam around on the beach as you will find a board from airport authorities which is their foolproof system. And on the board you will find written following words:
"Keep off the beach, when the windsock is flying and the airport is active."
But you will happen to see this site only in case you happen to visit Barra.
